Brazil-Themed Solo Photoshoot at the Selarón Steps and Praia Vermelha

A yellow and green photoshoot is one of the easiest ways to take home a photo that says Rio. This session did it in two very different places: the loud, colorful Selarón Steps and the calm beach of Praia Vermelha under Sugarloaf Mountain.
The first half is street and tile. The second half is sand, water and the Brazilian flag.
The photos in this gallery are from my session with Nicole.
Selarón Steps: tiles, ribbons and bright walls
In Santa Teresa the steps are only part of the scene. Around the staircase there are walls painted green, red and yellow, a wall of colorful ribbons and a mosaic with the Brazilian flag. We used all of them, which means one location gives you a lot of different backgrounds.
A yellow top with green details matched the colors of the tiles. When the background is this busy, a simple outfit in one or two colors keeps the photo clear.
Praia Vermelha: calm water and the Sugarloaf
Praia Vermelha is a small beach in the Urca neighborhood, at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. The water is usually calmer than on the open beaches, and the mountain gives every wide photo a strong backdrop.
We began with a crochet outfit on the sand, moved to a yellow swimsuit with a Brazilian flag and finished in the water. Playing with sand and waves makes poses feel natural, even if you have never posed before.
Tips for a similar photoshoot
- Go to Selarón early in the morning for fewer people on the steps.
- Combine a city location and a beach in one session to get very different photos.
- Bring a flag or a sarong in the Brazilian colors if you want this theme.
