Ipanema Beach Photoshoot with a Red Dress and Sunflowers, Rio

A red dress and a bouquet of sunflowers is a simple combination that works almost anywhere, and on Ipanema Beach under a cloudy sky it is even stronger. The red stands out against the gray, the green sea and the pale sand.

This solo session moved from the water line to the sand and then into the waves, with a lot of laughing along the way.

The photos in this gallery are from my session with Ru.

Walking at the water line

We started with the waves washing around the feet and the dress moving in the wind. Holding the flowers on one side, looking back over the shoulder and raising the bouquet toward the sky are easy poses that always work.

The open back of the dress also makes good photos from behind.

Running and wide shots

Wide frames show how big the beach is, with the sea and the mountains in the distance. Running along the shore, kicking up a bit of water, gave us the most energetic photos.

Sitting on the sand with the sunflowers

Sitting on the sand with the bouquet in the lap makes the photos softer and closer. The yellow of the sunflowers repeats the color of the sand and balances the red.

Playing in the waves

For the last part we went into the waves. Spinning, laughing and lifting the arms while the water splashed gave the most joyful photos of the session.

Tips for a similar photoshoot

  • Strong colors work well on a cloudy beach day. Red, yellow and white are good choices.
  • A bouquet gives you something to do with your hands and adds a second color to the photos.
  • A long dress moves beautifully in the wind and in the water. Expect to get wet, and bring a towel.
  • Early morning and late afternoon have fewer people and softer light on Ipanema.
