Couple's Photoshoot at Christ the Redeemer, Rio: Steps, Sugarloaf Views and a Ring

Christ the Redeemer is the postcard of Rio, and a cloudy day can make it even more dramatic. In this session the clouds moved around the statue and over Sugarloaf Mountain, and the white dress and dark suit stood out against the gray and the stone.
We worked in three parts: the foot of the statue, the steps below it and the viewpoint over the bay, and the gallery ends with a moment on one knee and a ring.
The photos in this gallery are from my session with Andres and Alexandra.
At the foot of the statue
We started close to the base of the monument, with the statue towering above the couple. Embraces, kisses and a few dips look strong from here, because the low angle makes the statue and the people share the same frame.
Wide shots from a bit further back show the whole figure with its open arms and the clouds moving behind.
Sitting on the steps
The steps below the statue are a good place to slow down. Sitting close, the couple laughed and whispered, and these relaxed frames show their connection more than the posed ones.
From the steps, the statue stays above them in the frame, so the photos have both closeness and scale.
The viewpoint with Sugarloaf
From the viewpoint you can see the city, the bay and Sugarloaf Mountain through the clouds. We walked hand in hand along the balustrade, danced and ran a little, with the white skirt moving in the wind.
A dip with the mountain behind became one of the favorite photos of the session.
On one knee on the steps
Back on the steps, with the statue centered above them, there is a sequence with the man on one knee in front of the woman. From the stairs, even a small figure reads clearly, since the lines of the steps lead the eye to the statue.
Rings, close details and a last dip
Close detail shots of hands and a ring add a quiet moment between the wide frames. They are the kind of photo couples like to keep next to the big ones.
We finished with a long embrace, a portrait of the woman on the steps and a last dip at the viewpoint with Sugarloaf in the clouds.
Tips for a similar photoshoot
- Go early, when there are fewer people around the statue. Opening hours, tickets and access rules can change, so check them before your date.
- White and dark outfits stand out against stone and a cloudy sky. Bring a warm layer, because it can be cool and windy at the top.
- Clouds can cover the statue for a few minutes at a time. We wait and shoot again when they open, so allow some extra time.
- If you are planning a surprise proposal, tell me. I also photograph proposals in Rio and we can plan the moment together.
